Global warming: the Servier strategy validated by the SBTi

Despite the exceptional and one-off drop in greenhouse gas emissions linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, the fight against global warming is still far from being won.

In this context, Servier reaffirms its commitment thanks to the “Servier Climate Commitment” project validated by the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative), a recognized international organization and expert in greenhouse gas emission reduction trajectories.

The first stage of this project consisted of an evaluation of the Group’s direct and indirect emissions during 2015-2016, i.e. 1,014,000 tons of CO2 equivalent over this period.

Following this diagnosis, and in line with the commitments of COP 21 and the Paris agreement signed in 2015, Servier has set itself an ambitious objective: to reduce its global CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030. These reduction targets are set for each consumption item: energy, transport, packaging, purchase of raw materials, etc.

Since January 2018, replacing airplanes with shipping for transport from production sites to distributors has made it possible to achieve 75% of the final reduction target within this perimeter, while maintaining the objectives of quality and timeliness of our distribution chain.

The “Science Based Targets” (SBTi) initiative is a collaboration between CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), UN Global Compact, WRI (World Resources Institute) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). This organization offers companies a framework for setting ambitious and consistent targets for reducing their carbon footprint. After submission, it can validate the approaches that meet the expectations thus defined. To date, only 373 companies in the world have received such validation and confirmed their commitment as Servier does today.
