According to “Globacan 2018“, gastric cancer is the 3rd most deadly cancer, after lung and colorectal cancer.

Risk factors

  • Helicobacter Pilori (Bacterium incriminated in 80% of cases)
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • High dietary slat intake, smoked meats and fish

Stages of development

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, gastric cancer can progress through different stages of development:

  1. The tumor invades the submucosa (layer of connective tissue covering the mucosa);
  2. The tumor reaches the muscularis mucosa (main muscle of the stomach);
  3. The tumor reaches the surrounding areas;
  4. The tumor crosses the serous membrane (membrane covering the outside of the stomach).

Symptoms

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Anemia

Treatments

  • Partial or total gastrectomy
  • Chemotherapy (sometimes combined with radiotherapy)
