New pictograms for drugs that may present a risk during pregnancy

In France since October 17, you may have noticed on the boxes of certain Servier medicines and the corresponding generics a pictogram comprised of a pregnant woman in a red triangle or crossed-through circle.

This is now mandatory in France for all medicinal products that may present a risk to the unborn baby if used during pregnancy.

The inclusion of such pictograms on the boxes helps to draw attention to the information on the risks incurred during pregnancy which is already given in the package leaflet.

Two types of pregnancy pictogram are used:

Pregnancy = Danger

This pictogram is included on the boxes of medicinal products that cannot be used by pregnant women, either before or during pregnancy, unless no therapeutic alternative is available.

Pregnancy = Forbidden

This pictogram is included on the boxes of medicinal products that cannot be used by pregnant women, either before or during pregnancy, even when no therapeutic alternative is available.

Depending on the medicinal product, these pictograms may apply to:

  • Adolescent girls and women of childbearing age not using effective contraception;
  • Pregnant women, either throughout pregnancy or during a certain period of pregnancy.

Medicines are not like other products. As a general rule, the use of medicinal products during pregnancy requires the opinion of a healthcare professional.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Should you need to take a treatment, they know the risks to you and your unborn baby. Do not suddenly stop taking your treatment without first consulting your doctor, pharmacist or midwife.
