Servier has compensated, is compensating and shall continue to compensate every single patient who has suffered as a result of Mediator

Suresnes, 15 May 2014 – Mr Olivier Laureau, President of the Servier Group, reiterated at a meeting with journalists yesterday that "as regards the ONIAM (French national office for compensation of medical accidents) and the civil proceedings, the Group has compensated, is compensating, and shall continue to compensate every single patient who has suffered as a result of this product".

On the subject of the future trials, Mr Laureau stated that it was the Group’s intention to "defend its position with determination", as he “considers that there are many elements in the case that have maybe not been said, or not been heard, and these will be heard".

"Despite the unfair and at times excessive attacks, we have always had the utmost respect for patients and the judiciary", he declared. "This affair deeply affects all of us here in the Group", he added.

This declaration is in line with a compensation programme initiated at the beginning of 2011 with the proposal by Servier of a compensation fund. The ONIAM is in charge of handling the claims. Of the 8350 claims filed, 2400 have been examined to date by the ONIAM, approximately 75% of which have been rejected due to being unrelated with the consumption of Mediator. Servier has made offers of compensation for all of the finalized claims submitted to it by the ONIAM so far. Compensation has already been paid out to 300 claimants, with a mean déficit fonctionnel permanent (permanent functional impairment) rating of 5% (the ONIAM usually only awards compensation for ratings of 25% and above).
